Estructura Gramatical If + Present Simple, ... Will / Can / May + Infinitive

¿Cuándo se utiliza?

  • Posibilidades futuras realistas: Planes, advertencias u ofertas condicionadas.
  • Consecuencias inmediatas o lógicas: Resultados previsibles de elecciones tomadas hoy.
  • Instrucciones y sugerencias: En ocasiones, la cláusula de resultado adopta forma imperativa (ej: *If you are tired, go to sleep*).

Estructura Gramatical If + Past Simple, ... Would / Could / Might + Infinitive

💡
Uso Académico: Was vs. Were
If she were here, If he were to call). Aunque en el registro informal "was" es aceptable, en el examen CAE siempre debes utilizar were.

Third Conditional Nivel B2-C1 · Arrepentimiento Pasado

Estructura Gramatical If + Past Perfect, ... Would Have / Could Have / Might Have + Past Participle

Equivalencia Clave Unless = If ... not

Ejemplos y Comparativas Directas

Oración con Unless

Unless you register before Friday, you cannot attend the conference.

Equivalente con "If not"

If you do not register before Friday, you cannot attend the conference.

Si no te registras antes del viernes, no puedes asistir a la conferencia.

Oración con Unless

The company will face bankruptcy unless sales increase next quarter.

Equivalente con "If not"

The company will face bankruptcy if sales do not increase next quarter.

Unless they offer a substantial discount, we will not purchase the software.

Equivalente con "If not"

We will not purchase the software if they do not offer a substantial discount.

⚠️
Evita el error común en el CAE
Nunca utilices verbos negativos justo detrás de **unless**.
Unless you don't pay the fee, you won't enter. (Incorrecto)
Unless you pay the fee, you won't enter. (Correcto)

Whether Nivel C1 · Elección Dubitativa

Enfoque Académico Whether presenta opciones y otorga un registro formal y preciso

Casos en los que "Whether" es OBLIGATORIO

  • Después de preposiciones: Cuando la cláusula condicional sigue directamente a una preposición (ej: *It depends on whether...*).
  • Antes de verbos en infinitivo con 'TO': Para reflejar dilemas o elecciones directas (ej: *I don't know whether to go...*).
  • Seguido inmediatamente por "or not" al inicio: Creando una cláusula de indiferencia (ej: *Whether or not you like it...*).
  • Funcionando como sujeto: Cuando la condición encabeza y actúa de sujeto en la frase (ej: *Whether they win is irrelevant*).

Ejemplos y Usos Avanzados

Elección general (Registro formal)

It is entirely up to you whether we dine in or order takeout tonight.

Obligatorio tras preposición 'ABOUT'

I had serious doubts about whether the team was fully prepared.

(No se admite "if")

Obligatorio ante infinitivo 'TO STUDY'

She was struggling to choose whether to study in London or Boston next year.

(No se admite "if to study")

Indiferencia con "Whether or not"

Whether or not you agree with the new regulations, they will be launched tomorrow.

Inversiones avanzadas Nivel C1+ · Elegancia Formal

Fórmulas de Inversión Should / Were / Had + Subject + Verb... (sin 'If')

Las 3 Inversiones Principales

  • Inversión con SHOULD (Reemplaza First Conditional): Aporta una gran cortesía o sentido de contingencia (ej: *Should you need help...*).
  • Inversión con WERE (Reemplaza Second Conditional): Hipótesis puras o consejos en registro elevado (ej: *Were I in your position...*). Si hay otro verbo, se usa *to + infinitivo* (ej: *Were they to accept...*).
  • Inversión con HAD (Reemplaza Third Conditional): Arrepentimientos formales y especulaciones del pasado (ej: *Had I known the truth...*).

Comparativa: Estructura Normal vs. Inversión

Diferencia Visual

Estilo Directo (Direct Speech)

“I am tired.”

Palabras exactas en presente, encerradas entre comillas.

Estilo Indirecto (Reported Speech)

He said that he was tired.

Mensaje reportado en pasado, omitiendo las comillas.

Ejemplos Básicos Comparativos

Reported Speech

They said that they wanted to help.

Dijeron que querían ayudar.

Direct Speech

Reported Speech

He promised that he would call me that night.

Prometió que me llamaría esa noche.

3. Demonstratives & Pronouns (Demostrativos y Pronombres)

Estilo Directo (Direct) Estilo Indirecto (Reported)
this that
these those
💡
Ej: Si Alicia dice “I lost my passport” y lo reporta otra persona, se convierte en “Alicia said she had lost her passport”.

3. Reported Statements Nivel B2 · Declaraciones

El contraste crucial: SAY vs. TELL Say + (that) + Cláusula   |   Tell + Person (object) + (that) + Cláusula

Si quieres mencionar a quién se lo dice, debes usar la preposición **to** (ej: *She said to me that...* - menos común).

Direct Speech

“I am currently researching a new vaccine,” the scientist announced.

⚡ Reported Speech (Present Continuous → Past Continuous)

The scientist announced that she was currently researching a new vaccine.

⚡ Reported Speech (Will → Would)

She promised that she would call me as soon as she arrived at the airport.

Regla Sintáctica de C1 Orden de palabras: Sujeto + Verbo   |   Sin auxiliares (do/does/did)
1. Yes / No Questions

Uso de IF / WHETHER

2. Wh- Questions

Mantener la "Question Word"

Si la pregunta empieza por *Where, Why, Who, When, How*, retenemos esa palabra interrogativa y colocamos inmediatamente detrás el sujeto seguido del verbo.

Ejemplos Yes / No Questions

Direct Question

Did you see the match yesterday?” he asked.

⚡ Reported Question (If + Past Simple → Past Perfect)

He asked me if I had seen the match the previous day.

Direct Question

Are you satisfied with the contract terms?” the lawyer asked.

⚡ Reported Question (Whether + Present Simple → Past Simple)

The lawyer wanted to know whether I was satisfied with the contract terms.

*(Uso formal de "whether")*

Ejemplos Wh- Questions

Direct Question

“Where do you live?” she asked me.

⚡ Reported Question (Sujeto + Verbo, sin auxiliar DO)

She asked me where I lived.

Me preguntó dónde vivía. *(No se permite: where did I live)*

Direct Question

“Why did you refuse the job offer?” they inquired.

⚡ Reported Question (Sujeto + Verbo, sin auxiliar DID)

They inquired why I had refused the job offer.

Fórmula de Imperativo Indirecto Reporting Verb + Object + (Not) To + Infinitive

Verbos de Reporte y Matices

  • Tell / Order (Orden): Reporta mandatos directos y obligatorios. Ej: *She told me to stand up.*
  • Ask (Petición): Transmite peticiones corteses. Ej: *He asked me to close the door.*
  • Warn (Advertencia): Reporta advertencias sobre peligros o consecuencias. Ej: *She warned us not to go out.*
  • Advise (Consejo): Reporta recomendaciones directas. Ej: *The doctor advised him to rest.*

Ejemplos Prácticos

Direct Command

Do not walk on the grass!” the warden shouted to the tourists.

⚡ Reported Command (Warn + Object + NOT TO + Infinitive)

The warden warned the tourists not to walk on the grass.

Direct Request

“Could you please submit the report by 5 PM?” she asked.

⚡ Reported Request (Ask + Object + TO + Infinitive)

She asked me to submit the report by 5 PM.

Direct Command

Do your homework immediately!” my mother told me.

⚡ Reported Command (Tell + Object + TO + Infinitive)

My mother told me to do my homework immediately.

Mi madre me dijo que hiciera mis deberes inmediatamente.

Patrón 1: Verb + Gerund ( -ing ) suggest, recommend, admit, deny

Ej: He denied taking the company money.

Patrón 2: Verb + To + Infinitive refuse, promise, agree, threaten

Ej: They refused to sign the new contract terms. *(Se negaron a firmar)*

Patrón 3: Verb + Object + To + Infinitive advise, warn, encourage, remind, invite

Ej: She advised me to study more consistently. *(Me aconsejó estudiar de forma más constante)*

Patrón 4: Verb + That + Clause insist, suggest, claim, explain, admit, deny

Ej: He insisted that they should postpone the launch. *(Insistió en que debían posponer el lanzamiento)*

Patrón 5: Verb + Preposition + Gerund ( -ing ) apologise for, insist on, accuse (someone) of

Ej: She apologised for being late to the lecture. *(Se disculpó por llegar tarde)*

💡
Verb + -ing: She suggested leaving early.
Verb + that + clause: She suggested that we (should) leave early.

Incorrecto: He said me that he was tired.
✓ Correcto: He told me that he was tired.
✓ Correcto: He said that he was tired.
2. Mantener auxiliares interrogativos en estilo indirecto
Incorrecto: She asked me where did I go.
✓ Correcto: She asked me where I went. / where I had gone.
Sugerencia: Elimina siempre auxiliares como do, does, did y usa el orden afirmativo.
3. Estructurar SUGGEST o RECOMMEND con "Object + to-Infinitive"
Incorrecto: She suggested us to leave.
✓ Correcto: She suggested that we should leave.
✓ Correcto: She suggested leaving.

Regla 1

Infinitivo sin "TO"

Siempre van seguidos de un infinitivo pelado (bare infinitive), omitiendo la preposición to (con excepción de ought to).

He must to go.
He must go.
Regla 2

Invariables

She cans speak English.
She can speak English.
Regla 3

Sin Auxiliares

No utilizan los auxiliares do, does, did para construir la negación (añaden not o n't) ni para formular la interrogación (inversión sujeto-verbo).

Do you can help me?
Can you help me?
Regla 4

*be able to*, *have to*).

I will can go tomorrow.
I will be able to go tomorrow.

can't / couldn't have + participio (Certeza negativa en el pasado)

You couldn't have seen Sarah yesterday; she is currently in Japan.

should / ought to have + participio (Arrepentimiento, crítica o consejo pasado)

I should have studied harder; the test was incredibly demanding.

might / could have + participio (Posibilidad o habilidad pasada no realizada)

You needn't have cooked so much food; half of our guests didn't show up.

must Obligación Interna

have to Obligación Externa

may Probabilidad Realista (50%)

might Probabilidad Remota (20-30%)

could Habilidad General Pasada

was/were able to Logro Específico Único

6. Errores comunes Evita Penalizaciones · C1

⚠️
Sintaxis Incorrecta Cambridge Penalty: High

1. Añadir "to" tras un modal puro

❌ We must to finish the essay by tomorrow.
✓ We must finish the essay by tomorrow.

Los verbos modales puros (must, can, could, may, might, should, will, would, shall) siempre van seguidos directamente de un infinitivo sin to (bare infinitive).

⚠️
Conjugación de Persona Cambridge Penalty: High

2. Conjugación en tercera persona singular ("-s")

❌ She cans speak French very fluently.
✓ She can speak French very fluently.

Los verbos modales puros son invariables. No añaden nunca una s ni sufren ninguna alteración morfológica en tercera persona singular (he, she, it).

⚠️
Estructura de Auxiliar Cambridge Penalty: High

3. Uso de auxiliares ("do/does/did") en preguntas y negaciones

❌ Do you must work late tonight? / I don't should eat sugar.
✓ Must you work late tonight? / I shouldn't eat sugar.

⚠️
Confusión Semántica Cambridge Penalty: Extreme

4. Confundir "needn't have done" con "didn't need to do"

❌ I needn't have woken up early, so I happily stayed in bed.
✓ I didn't need to wake up early, so I happily stayed in bed.

didn't need to do indica que la acción no era necesaria y por tanto no se llevó a cabo. needn't have done significa que la acción no era necesaria pero se realizó de todos modos (desperdicio de esfuerzo).

⚠️
Deducción Errónea Cambridge Penalty: Extreme

5. Usar "could have" para una deducción pasada de certeza negativa

❌ He could have stolen the money; he was in another city at that time!
✓ He couldn't have stolen the money; he was in another city at that time!

Para expresar certeza de que algo NO ocurrió en el pasado (deducción lógica negativa), el único verbo correcto es can't have o couldn't have. Usar could have indicaría simplemente posibilidad general positiva.

Grammar  /  Relative Clauses Mastery

1. ¿Qué es una cláusula relativa? Nivel B1 · Fundamental

Se introduce con un pronombre relativo (who, which, that, whose, where, when).

Ejemplos

The man who lives next door is a doctor.

This is the book that changed my life.

I have a friend. She speaks five languages.I have a friend who speaks five languages.

2. Pronombres relativos Nivel B1-B2 · Intermedio

who personas The woman who called you...
which cosas/animales The car which broke down...
that personas o cosas (defining) The film that we saw...
whose posesión ("cuyo/a") The writer whose books sell...
where lugares The town where I grew up...
when momentos/tiempo The day when we met...
why razón (tras "reason") The reason why he left...

Errores Comunes

❌ The man which lives here...
✓ The man who/that lives here...
❌ The house who I bought...
✓ The house which/that I bought...

3. Defining relative clauses Nivel B2 · Intermedio

No llevan comas.

Ejemplos

The students who passed the exam will receive a certificate.

This is the restaurant that we love.

Este es el restaurante que nos encanta.

Errores Comunes

❌ The students, who passed, will receive a certificate.
✓ The students who passed will receive a certificate.

Ejemplos

My brother, who lives in Berlin, is a teacher.

The Eiffel Tower, which was built in 1889, attracts millions of tourists.

Errores Comunes

❌ My mother, that is a nurse, works nights.
✓ My mother, who is a nurse, works nights.

5. Defining vs Non-defining Nivel B2 · Intermedio

Contraste de Significado Defining (sin comas): The passengers who had tickets boarded first.
Non-defining (con comas): The passengers, who had tickets, boarded first.
Propiedad Defining Non-defining
Información Esencial (identifica) Extra (añade detalle)
Comas No se usan Obligatorias
Uso de "that" Permitido Prohibido

The film (which) we saw... → "We" es sujeto, omitimos which.
The film which won the award... → "Won" es verbo, NO se puede omitir.

Ejemplos

The book I read was great.

El libro que leí fue fantástico. (Omitimos 'that/which' porque 'I' es el sujeto)

The man who called you is here.

El hombre que te llamó está aquí. (Pronombre obligatorio ya que funciona como sujeto)

Errores Comunes

❌ The man called you is here.
✓ The man who called you is here.

Usamos that o elisión.
The house (that) I live in is old.
Usamos which (cosas) o whom (personas). Nunca "that".
The house in which I live is old. / The colleague with whom I work is nice.

Ejemplos

The person to whom you spoke is the manager.

Ejemplos

He arrived late, which annoyed everyone.

Llegó tarde, lo cual molestó a todos. ('which' hace referencia al hecho completo de llegar tarde)

She passed all her exams, which was a relief.

Errores Comunes

❌ He arrived late, what annoyed everyone.
✓ He arrived late, which annoyed everyone.

The man who is waiting outside...The man waiting outside...
Participio Pasado (-ed / 3ª col): Sustituye a cláusulas en voz pasiva.
